Our Code of Conduct

Last updated: November 16, 2025

Seoul City Improv strives to establish a secure and inclusive environment for all performers and audiences. Our primary objective is to engage in our craft and unleash our creative potential within a lively and supportive setting, free of any harassment or discrimination. Participants should never feel threatened or excluded based on their race, color, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, nationality, age, physical ability, or neural type.

While we encourage freedom of expression and exploration of a wide range of topics, we emphasize that such discussions must be approached in a creative and intelligent manner, free from hurtfulness, disrespect, or mockery.

We expect all participants to respect personal boundaries and consent as established by the teacher/host and the rest of the participants at the beginning of every open session, class, or show.

All participants must comply with local laws and regulations.

We reserve the right to dismiss participants, performers, or audience members who fail to adhere to our code of conduct.

Harassment Policy

Seoul City Improv supports the rights of all its community members to work in a safe and supportive environment, free from discrimination and harassment based on race, color, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, nationality, age, physical ability, or neural type.

Harassment is any unwanted communication or act, either one-time or systemic. This applies to all official activities within the Seoul City Improv community—onstage, offstage, and online. Harassment includes but is not limited to:

  • Hate speech of any kind against any person

  • Negative stereotyping

  • Intimidation or bullying

  • Microaggressions

  • Other verbal, physical, or online conduct of an aggressive, intimidating, or sexual nature

SCI will not tolerate any forms of harassment. Complaints will be immediately investigated by the leadership team and community volunteers.

Complaint Process

We are dedicated to promptly and confidentially addressing any concerns. Concerns can be reported directly to SCI (via email at seoulimprov@gmail.com or using the contact form on our website).

If there is a fear of a potential conflict of interest with specific community members or leaders, the following community leaders and volunteers can help advocate for those who wish to stay anonymous.

Community leaders and volunteers:

  • James Chung (he/him) (Korean/English) (jameswchung@gmail.com)

  • Jessica Lee (she/her) (English) (jessicaclee@gmail.com)

  • Bazil Manietta (they/them) (English/Korean) (El.Bazil@gmail.com)

  • Sarah Mack (she/her) (English/Korean) (Sarahsseoulsearch@gmail.com)

  • Seungsoo ‘Chris’ Ha (he/him) (English/Korean) (hac541309@gmail.com)

Expectations of Teachers

  • Facilitate a safe, creative class environment that fully adheres to SCI’s code of conduct.

  • Consistently recognize that there are multilayered and intersecting power dynamics as a teacher.

  • Do not engage in any verbal, physical, or online harassment of an aggressive, intimidating, or sexual nature.

  • Recognize that safety, trust, and support are always more important than the temporary existence of an improv scene. Stop scenes if necessary and immediately address any situations that may impact students’ psychological and/or physical safety.

  • Receive and process any complaints immediately. Escalate to SCI leadership if needed.

Expectations of Performers

  • Do not engage in harassment of any kind with audience members, theater staff, or other performers/teams.

  • Show up on time and respect the time allotted. Maintain a professional attitude on and off stage, and listen to instructions given by SCI leaders and Funtastic staff members.

  • Respect physical boundaries. Don’t do anything physically dangerous to yourself or your scene partner.

  • If interacting with the audience, respect the audience members' personal space and be mindful of their reactions. Avoid any potentially sensitive topics that may not resonate well with the audience.

  • Support other groups and performers. Respect the show or scene onstage, do not talk, walk around, or cause any distractions.

  • During a show - do not deprecate other performers or teams onstage. If you observe an issue (barring a fire or other emergency) mid-show, please notify the host who will take responsibility to handle such issues.

  • Post-show - if the conduct in question was recognized after the show, feel free to report to SCI leadership.

Expectations of Students

  • Students are expected to attend every class, but we understand that personal matters can occur. Therefore, students enrolled in the core SCI classes (101, 201) are allowed to miss two classes and still receive a passing mark for the class.

  • Arriving more than 30 minutes late or leaving more than 30 minutes early is marked as an absence.

  • Elective classes will have their own rules set by the instructor.

  • Students are asked to refrain from causing distractions during class. We request that students abstain from using mobile devices (except to take notes). If you require accommodation related to such devices, please let SCI know ahead of time.

  • Students are expected to help create an environment free of harassment. This includes but is not limited to recognizing that difficult topics such as race, color, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, nationality, age, or disability MUST be done in a truly creative and intelligent way, and not in the spirit of hurtfulness, disrespect, or mockery.

  • Students who feel they have been harassed or feel threatened by other students should report the incident to the teacher. If the teacher in question is involved, or the student otherwise feels unable to report to the teacher, they can report to SCI leadership or community volunteers.

  • SCI teachers and leadership reserve the right to dismiss students who do not abide by our rules. Participants found breaking the rules may not be eligible to receive a refund at the sole discretion of SCI teachers and/or leadership.

Expectations of Open Session Attendees

  • Treat everyone with respect and kindness. Embrace the diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

  • Avoid causing distractions during class, i.e., talking over the instructor or your fellow attendees.

  • Be attentive and present. Watch your classmates during the exercises and performances. If you need to use your mobile device for reasons other than taking notes, kindly step off stage or outside to do so.

  • Avoid giving artistic notes to fellow open session attendees; it is the instructor's responsibility to manage feedback for the appropriate attendee level. Feel free to ask questions and talk to the instructor privately with any further issues.

Expectations of Audience Members

  • Do not engage in harassment of any kind with fellow audience members, theater staff, or performers.

  • Refrain from heckling, yelling at performers, or interrupting. Only engage with the performers if they engage with you first.

  • Be respectful of the performance: place your phone in silent mode and refrain from having conversation while in the audience during the show. If you need to talk or use your mobile device, step outside briefly to do so.

  • SCI reserves the right to dismiss audience members who fail to adhere to our code of conduct.

We will continue to evolve our code of conduct as the needs of our community and our world change.
