Frequently Asked Questions

General

  • What is Seoul City Improv (SCI)?

    • SCI is an improv community started in 2007 and is the premier English-language improv comedy group in Korea. We host regular shows as well as open practices, classes, and workshop around Korea and (occasionally) around the world! Check out our Wikipedia page for more details!

  • What is improv?

    • Improv, short for Improvisational Comedy, is a form of comedy where everything on stage is made up on the spot. .

    • Improv theater has ancient roots, but modern improv comedy began in the USA during the 1940s. In the ensuing decades, improv grew to become a major influence on movies and television and launched the careers of many of the most famous comedians. In the 1990s, the popular UK and US TV show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" brought improv comedy to a wider audience.

  • Is it really unscripted?

    • Yes! This is our most common question after each show! In the spirit of improvisation, everything we say or do on stage is unscripted!

  • What language is it in?

    • Much like this FAQ, all our shows are currently in English.

  • Is there Korean-language improv?

    • Yes, we have partner groups that do Korean-language improv. Contact us for more details!

Shows

  • How do I buy tickets?

    • General admission is cash only and only available at the door on a first come, first served basis. There are no physical tickets to claim and we open doors 30 minutes before show time. There are a limited number of seats and some standing room, so come early for a good spot!

  • What are your shows like? If I come, will I be picked on, forced to participate, or embarrassed?

    • Our shows are cheap, fun, and BYOB. We occasionally ask for suggestions or volunteers, but no one is forced to participate or otherwise embarrass themselves.

  • Are your shows appropriate? Can I bring my kids to your show?

    • In general, we try and avoid overly explicit content in our shows, but because everything is created on the spot, there may be some adult language or content. We do not actively censor our shows, however, so the choices made on stage will vary greatly from night to night and can’t guarantee what exactly will be said or done. Because our shows may contain adult language and content, it may not be appropriate for young or sensitive audiences. Regarding minors, we generally don’t turn people away, and leave that to the discretion of parents/guardians. As alcohol is consumed at our venues, we recommend 19+ for our audiences. People under the legal age of drinking are prohibited from consuming alcohol on the premises.

Getting Involved

  • How do I get involved?

    • We operate as an open community with a rotating cast of performing members, depending on the show. Most people get their start with SCI at our open sessions (Sundays 6-9pm). Others get their feet wet during one of our workshops or 8-week improv courses.

  • Do I need experience to join/come to an open practice session?

    • No! We welcome everyone regardless of skill level, background or experience to come join us.

  • Do I need to reserve a spot at an open practice session / tell someone that I am coming?

    • No!

  • Is my English good enough to come to an open session?

    • We welcome people of all backgrounds to come by and give improv a shot. We are happy to take things slowly or explain exercises more thoroughly if you find yourself lost.

  • What are your open sessions like?

    • Our sessions are typically broken down into introductions/warm ups and then stage exercises. It’s a very friendly and casual environment where no one is forced to do something they are uncomfortable with. Come alone or with friends and feel free to bring a beer!

  • Can I just come and watch the Open Session without participating?

    • We encourage people to at least join in on the introductions/warm ups, so we can learn your name and get everyone to casually mingle with each other. We have found that having spectators can make some newer members uncomfortable. No one will force you to join in on stage exercises, however.

  • What does it cost to attend an Open Session?

    • 5,000 won per session, and free for first timers!

  • Do you offer classes?

    • Yes! Our 8-week courses are very popular and frequently sell out! We offer introductory, as well as intermediate, classes. Our introductory classes are created to allow a smoother introduction into improv. Check out the courses page, or contact us for more details. All our classes end with a final graduation show to give you a chance to share your newfound talent.

  • I am a (teacher/actor/model/doctor/celebrity), will this course be useful for me?

    • Absolutely! Our course is designed to help you become a better collaborator and help you think more quickly on your feet. Many have told us that it’s done wonders for their confidence and creativity. Not only that, but we have a wide range of people from a number of different backgrounds come take our courses, so it’s great for networking.
